Jobs

There are opportunities for part- and full-time employment in the Gardens for students. This is an excellent way to add horticulture experience to a resume without traveling. Many of the students who have worked at the Gardens have gone on the careers in the horticulture industry, landscape architecture and other related fields. Students from all backgrounds and majors are welcome and invited to apply.

There are several full-time student internships available in the Garden. Students are responsible for the care and maintenance of the Rock Garden, as well as some work in the other parts of the Garden. This is a great opportunity to gain experience, earn money and learn about specialized gardens. The job is generally part-time in the spring and fall during school, and full-time in the summer.

Students interested in positions should contact Dr. Dennis Stimart in room 423B Horticulture or by email: dstimart@wisc.edu, in February of the year.

Internships Available

Gableman Internship -- An internship for an undergraduate student to gain experience in the Rock Garden. Awarded in the spring of each year with work experience from April through October. Support for the internship provided by Alberta and Dr. Warren Gabelman (professor emeritus).

Carlson Internship -- An internship for an undergraduate student to gain practical experience throughout the gardens. Position available annual from May through August. Support provided by A. David and Rose M. Carlson.

Volunteering

Allen Centennial Gardens welcomes the public to volunteer in the Garden. Any amount of time is welcome and appreciated. Past volunteers have ranged from inexperienced novice gardeners to horticulturalists. If you are looking for a place to volunteer and learn more about gardening or share your expertise, join us in this beautiful and relaxing setting. You can volunteer for an hour, a day, or any length of time throughout the year.

To volunteer, contact Mr. Ed Lyon, Head Gardener at (608) 262-1549 or by email: eslyon@wisc.edu. We are outside more often than inside, so please leave a message if you get the answering machine!
