'HyRed' Cranberry Released
A new cranberry cultivar has been developed by the research program
of Professor Brent McCown at the Department of Horticulture at the
University of Wisconsin. 'HyRed' is the result of a cross between
the cultivar 'Stevens' and a 'Ben Lear' selection.
'HyRed' has been selected primarily for early and intense fruit
color, with good color development of fruit even when buried beneath
the canopy cover.
In preliminary small scale trials, 'HyRed' had fruit size and yields
comparable to 'Stevens' and 'Ben Lear'. Below is a close-up of fruit
harvested from a commercial marsh in northern Wisconsin on September
14th, 2001

We are interested in having a broader evaluation of this new hybrid
cranberry and invite growers to participate. Limited propagation
material of 'HyRed' will be available for planting in 2002. A license
will not be required for these evaluation trials, however grower/evaluators
will have to enter into a Materials Transfer Agreement (click here
to see an example).
To put in an evaluation request or to obtain more information,
email Eric Zeldin (elzeldin@wisc.edu)
and put "HyRed" as the subject.
