Responsibilities

Teaching (50%): Minimum of 8 contact hours per semester with an emphasis on undergraduate education. Two courses designed and taught for 20+ years: Introductory Horticulture for Majors (35-60 students/yr.); Plant Propagation (40-80 students/yr.). Also active in undergraduate program of the institute for Environmental Studies where I was the first chair of the Environmental Certificate Program (100+ students from across all disciplines on campus) and continue on the Executive Committee since inception. Advise 30+ undergraduate students each yr. Member of Executive Committee, Land resources Graduate Program (a M.S./Ph.D. program for training in land use and environmental problems). Advise 3 to 5 graduate students/yr. as major professor. Participant in teacher education and K-12 programs.

Research (35%): Genetic improvement (breeding/biotechnology) of clonally propagated perennial crops, including fruits (cranberry), ornamentals (white birch, viburnums), forestry (poplar, white spruce), and phytopharmaceuticals (goldenseal).

Participation in and perpetuation of our shared governance system at UW-Madison

(15%): Active on numerous University committees and activities including The University Committee (the executive committee of the faculty; Chair), PROFS (UW Senate lobbying organization; President and Steering Committee member), and the UW Plant Growth Facilities Committee (Chaired) which formulated and is implementing major a remodeling/new construction plan for the campus.
