Werhane completed a B.S. in Biological Aspects of Conservation here in 1996, spent five years living and working in Oakland, California, and then moved back to Madison for an M.A. in librarianship.

Werhane's past work experience includes one winter at a Horticulture lab, a year each at the Allen Centennial Gardens and a Plant Pathology lab, one summer at an Agronomy test field, three years at an engineering library, two years at a teacher education library, over four years at a variety of other libraries, two years in non-profit management, and a summer at a farmer's market.
